Abstract
The context of our teaching and thinking about doctoral writing is the rapidly altering landscape of research and research education. This is a space of 'growth and expansion, changes in modes of knowledge production, modes of institutional and state governance, in forms of doctoral programmes and in pedagogies' (Boud and Lee 2009; 1). Universities are responding to a wide range of changed circumstances and students are experiencing altered forms of doctoral education and a heightened awareness of the impacts on them of greater international competition for graduate researchers.
