Abstract
Young people play a vital role in shaping wiser futures. This chapter critically reflects on ways of conceptualising youth leadership to unsettle assumptions about ‘youth’ and ‘leadership’ that are entrenched in scholarly policy and popular debates. By analysing the diverse ways young people create change by subverting the ‘normal ways of doing things’ we propose a notion of ‘youthful acts of leadership’ and illustrate these with three case studies from the Australian context. We argue that greater attention to how ‘youthful acts of leadership’ matter as a positive force for change is essential to shaping wiser futures.
