A longitudinal cohort study of psychological wellbeing in university students using ecological momentary assessment and sensor data from smartphones

Western Sydney University thesis: Doctoral thesis

Abstract

The Thesis comprises eight Chapters. Each Chapter is introduced with a synopsis placing them within the Thesis as a whole. Many of the Chapters were written as journal articles, and so include an abstract—where this is not the case, the synopsis also contains the abstract. Chapter 2 addresses what is already known from longitudinal studies of wellbeing in university students about the antecedents of wellbeing for this population, via a systematic review and meta-analysis. In Chapter 3 the data processing and feature extraction methods used for smartphone passive data in the study of wellbeing are examined in a systematic review, collecting information on these methods to inform the methods which were used in this Thesis. Methods are addressed in the next two Chapters, Chapter 4 on methods of data collection and analysis, and Chapter 5 on methods of data processing and feature extraction. The results from data collected by surveys, ecological momentary assessments, and linkage to university administrative data are presented in Chapter 6. The results from smartphone passive data collection are presented in Chapter 7. Finally, in Chapter 8 the results of this study are synthesised and related to the research questions, and their implications discussed.
