Research reveals that since 2011, writing achievement amongst primary aged students in Australia is declining. One identified cause is the predominant use of traditional didactic teaching approaches that lack intellectually and culturally enriched learning experiences. Recent findings prioritise the need for students to be engaged in explicit teaching that supports writing structure and the expression of ideas. Project Based Learning (PBL), a constructivist pedagogical approach, can enhance the vocabulary, expression, and organisation of ideas evident in writing. This project investigates how writing programs that incorporate the PBL Framework influence student achievement in writing. This case study focused on one year level in a specific school will provide fine grained detail on how a student-centred PBL approach to pedagogy can impact writing and the factors that impede and assist this. Findings will inform curriculum review and offer broad implications for reconsidering the teaching and learning of writing.
