This thesis studies the fundamental factors that shape and propel financial developments in Jordan - mainly in the specific context of investment in information technology by commercial banks. The generic topic is not new while the area of research has been heavily explored. Research on the role of financial development in economic development can often be traced back to Schumpeter (1912) who unequivocally stresses the role of a country's banking system for triggering, propelling and perpetuating economic development. At the very outset, it is imperative that we highlight the precise roles of financial systems for economic development: Financial systems mobilise savings to their best possible uses; Financial systems collect, collate and disseminate valuable information; Financial systems help decision-makers diversify away idiosyncratic risks; Financial systems encourage productive investment and thereby propel total factor productivity.
