Economic development and direct foreign investment in Asia highlight the importance of culture, as organisations should be considered in their external cultural context. Consequently, human resource management (HRM) practices can have distinct geographical patterns. HRM motivation practices can reflect an organisational ethical climate (OEC). In Buddhism, Buddhist values educate people on ethical awareness and self-management. However, little research has investigated the impact of Buddhist values on ethical climate and motivation practices. The thesis research explores the applicability of Buddhist values to aspects of HRM. An exploratory case study approach was used with semi-structured interviews of twelve managers from two organisations in Vietnam: one locally owned and one foreign owned. The findings indicated that Buddhist values of karma, caring and right livelihood impact OEC and motivation practices. The research provides an understanding of the impact of Buddhist culture on HRM practices in Vietnam and contributes knowledge of cultural and religious factors in HRM research.
